It is argued that efficient internal conversion in polyatomic molecules occurs when the energy gap between two potential energy surfaces is sufficiently small, so that, at finite nuclear velocities, the corrections to the Born‐Oppenheimer approximation can lead to significant transition probabilities. In particular this will occur near a conical intersection of two surfaces. An estimate of the transition probability is provided using the Zener criterion.
