Excess ionization of the upper atmosphere at high latitudes following solar flares has been observed on several occasions during IGY, through studies of the absorption of cosmic radio noise. The event occurring on July 29, 1955, following the class 3 solar flare at 03: 03 UT is discussed, The recordings of the 27.6Mc/sec cosmic noise received on this dnte at Thule, Greenland, and Barrow and College, Alaska, are shown, Identical receiving equipment, consisting of riometers connected to wide beam vertically-directed Yagi antennas, was used at each station.
