Demonstrates the existence of multiple rheumatoid factors and their relationship to 19 S and 7 S gamma globulins using double diffusion techniques.
No immediate change to RA diagnostics or care; leaves open the pathogenic role of multiple rheumatoid factors pending human studies.
By means of modified double diffusion technics in agar it has been possible to confirm previous findings that the rheumatoid factor is a 19 S gamma globulin which reacts with a fraction related to 7 S gamma globulin. With these technics, additional evidence of the existence of more than one rheumatoid factor in patients with rheumatoid arthritis has been obtained. These results suggest a close relationship of the rheumatoid factors to serologically active proteins in other disease states.
