Case study demonstrates enhanced sustainable development research across higher education institutions, indicating that shared values foster resilient Global North–South partnerships.
We use a case study approach to investigate how internationalisation in higher education can enhance excellence in research for sustainable development. Using examples from Stellenbosch University (South Africa) and the University of Warwick (United Kingdom), and against the background of their strategic partnership, the analysis of internationalisation goes beyond core functions of curriculum development and academic mobility to include notions of diversity and inclusion to embrace wider engagement with society across cultures, systems and borders. Multiple data sources support illustrative examples of distinct features of internationalisation across the two institutions. Recognised principles of international partnership in higher education provide the theoretical framework for the assessment. We find that convergence across different approaches to internationalisation, grounded in common values and standards, creates a suitable model for fostering long-lasting partnerships and mutually beneficial research collaborations between higher education institutions in the Global North and South.
