Qualitative process evaluation reveals that relational coordination facilitates cross-sectoral ADHD care implementation among professionals, indicating that relational infrastructure drives success.
Background: Organizing mental health services across sectors is essential yet challenging, particularly for children and adolescents with ADHD whose needs span psychiatric, educational and social domains. The REHAB model was developed to improve coordination and create a more coherent cross-sectoral care pathway. Aim: To explore how professionals experienced integrating the model into everyday practice with attention to implementation processes. Method: A qualitative process evaluation was conducted across three municipalities and one Child and Adolescent Mental Health clinic. Twenty-three professionals participated in interviews and focus groups. Data were analyzed using the Framework Method, mapped to implementation outcomes and reported according to COREQ. Findings: The model was viewed as meaningful, but integration was demanding in settings marked by turnover, reorganizations and digital transitions. Relational coordination supported shared understanding and practical problem solving, enabling functional fidelity. Conclusion: Successful implementation relied more on relational infrastructure and local ownership than on procedures.
