Methodological analysis demonstrates distinct epistemic roles for diagnostics in Bayesian workflow, highlighting how structured warrant typing clarifies model evaluation and auditability.
Bayesian Workflow systematizes a recurrent view of statistical practice. Models are provisional, simulated data are used to test procedures, computations are diagnosed, fitted models are criticized, scientific questions can force revisions upstream, and later discoveries can reopen earlier decisions. The book also distinguishes this temporal workflow from its desired scientific result, a virtuous tangle: a network of theories, estimands, designs, samples, estimators, estimates, target contexts, and explicit strategies of justification whose relations must hang together. This paper reads that program through The Statistical Bridge and uses Bridge vocabulary selectively. The book already establishes the need for iteration, explicit scientific justification, diagnostic pressure, and a distinction between statistical and scientific inference. The narrower claim is that several edges inside the tangle benefit from further typing. A relation may constitute evidence, declare a probability source, supply an identification premise, derive an inference certificate, add evidential support, transport a claim, or bound what a scientific conclusion is licensed to say. Those are different epistemic jobs with different failure modes. Four points carry the argument. First, the loop is how the analyst moves; the tangle is what must hang together. Second, iteration and warrant are separate workflow dimensions: evidence-neutral transformation may preserve or weaken warrant, while stronger warrant requires an evidence-producing event or rule. Third, the book's diagnostic repertoire becomes clearer when we ask what checking checks: prior-predictive checks, simulated-data recovery, simulation-based calibration, posterior-predictive checks, and sensitivity analysis address particular premises and promote warrant only where their evidence bears. Fourth, Theory of Data separately types the analytical identity and existence conditions of the points established through design, measurement, data collection, and sample construction. The resulting reading is complementary. Bayesian Workflow gives a rich anatomy of iterative scientific practice. The Statistical Bridge adds a particular typing of some warrant-bearing passages inside that anatomy, including probability-source location, evidential status, claim license, and refusal when a requested claim lacks a derivation. Keeping those relations distinguishable makes the tangle easier to audit, revise, and trust.
