Conceptual analysis demonstrates subsurface infrastructure is required for mature defenses against small unmanned aircraft systems, highlighting the need for underground fortification.
Beyond the Trench is an independent military concept paper examining whether improved surface trench systems remain an adequate deliberate defensive end-state in environments saturated by small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS). The paper argues that trenches should remain the immediate fighting and access layer, while subsurface infrastructure should increasingly be considered the protected backbone of mature defensive positions where physically feasible. It examines observation, channelization, attack geometry, electronic warfare, fiber-optic FPV drones, robotic excavation, resilience, and adversary cost exchange, while intentionally leaving detailed engineering solutions open for further experimentation and development.
