Direct observation is a highly suitable method for studying mother-infant relations. Although there are problems associated with this method they can be allayed through the use of certain tactics. On the other hand, indirect procedures (questionnaires, interviews) have serious limitations that are not easily overcome. The design and methodology of an observational study on 25 mother-infant pairs are presented.
