The observed variation of the coercivity of small particles with high anisotropy is as the reciprocal of the diameter. It is shown that it is possible to reconcile this observation with the commonly accepted hypothesis that nucleation occurs at small defects occurring randomly in the particles. By making suitable assumptions about the probability density of the nucleation field of individual nucleation sites the correct size dependency of the coercivity of an assembly of small particles may be obtained.
