Intel spends rlarr2n a year on research and development the vast majority on taking new chip designs and manufacturing processes from the research lab to very high volume production as quickly as possible. But although the lion's share of the budget goes to this work, it's vital for Intel to keep investing in the fundamental research which creates a pipeline of new product ideas and processes to feed into its manufacturing machine. David Tennnenhouse is vice president of the corporate technology group and director of research at Intel. It's his job to keep new ideas flowing to help sustain Intel's current business of making PC processors and related chips, and to help create or exploit new markets that it can expand into. According to Tennenhouse there are three phase of R&D at Intel-research, advanced development and development. This paper discusses Tennenhouse's responbilities at Intel.
