The branching ratios of ion-molecule reactions at low kinetic energies are determined from a statistical description of an intermediate complex. Simple estimates are given for the relative probability of two reactions, one of which involves three free particles as products and the other two free particles as products. These estimates show that some highly exothermal ion-molecule reactions are relatively rare. Sufficiently exothermal reactions lead preferentially to dissociative charge transfer. Noble-gas-ion-hydrogen-molecule reactions are treated as examples.
