Abstract 1,1,1,3‐Tetrachlorobutane reacts with an excess of many nucleophilic reagents to give good yields of products Cl 2 C = CH‐CHX‐CH 3 , in which X may be an OH, O‐alkyl, O‐aryl, aryl‐OH, NH 2 , alkylamino or dialkylamino group. Trichlorobutenes are probably intermediates, a mixture of 1,1,3‐trichlorobutene‐1 and 1,1,1‐trichlorobutene‐2 being formed when using a molecular proportion of alkali. The results are compared with those recently reported by Nesmeyanov et al. A. N. Nesmeyanov, R. Kh. Freidlina, L. I. Zakharkin and A. B. Belyavsky , Zhur. Obshchei. Khim. 26 , 1070 (1956): Chem.
