Multichannel electron scattering by atomic hydrogen is studied by using a complex optical potential. Real and virtual excitation and ionization of the target system as well as electron-exchange effects are included in the calculation. A free-particle Green's function is used as an approximation for the propagator in intermediate states. The contributions of the excited and ionized states to the nonlocal optical potential are examined separately. Ionization and excitation cross sections are calculated exactly without further approximation for electron energies greater than 1 Ry. The calculations are in good agreement with recent experimental measurements of differential cross sections.
