The room temperature magnetic susceptibility of non‐stoichiometric GeTe has been measured; by calculating the contributions of the free carriers and the ionic lattice using the appropriate formulae and the known parameters of the system, the contribution to the susceptibility of the lattice defects has been obtained as a function of composition. Analysis of this lattice defect susceptibility shows that vacancy and anti‐structure defects are predominant in the non‐stoichiometric lattice and that their density is extremely high.
