Light scattering of nonabsorbing colloidal spheres in the direction towards the incident primary beam (backward direction) is investigated on the basis of the Mie theory. The parameters considered are α = 0.2(0.2)15.2 and m = 1.20. The data obtained are compared with those derived from the Rayleigh-Gans-Debye equation. A simple equation is derived by means of which the α values at maximal and minimal scattering can be calculated in satisfactory approximation. Data of the ``extreme dissymmetry''—i0/i180— are given.
