A two-photon absorption technique is proposed for the measurement of the Stark shift and the Zeeman splitting of the ion energy levels in the diode acceleration gap of a magnetically insulated ion diode for the purpose of determining the local electric and magnetic fields. Various measurement schemes are discussed. The required laser power and linewidth are estimated and found to be attainable by the present day lasers. A measurement of the ion transverse velocities in the diode gap is also proposed.
