A rapid method for removing free ferric oxides from soil clays with sodium dithionite solution buffered with sodium bicarbonate solution is described. Effective dispersion of the clay suspension during this extraction procedure is achieved by means of ultrasonic agitation. Methods are proposed for the determination of silica and alumina in the dithionite extract which are more reliable than those previously employed. Kaolinite and micaceous clay minerals are unaffected by the treatment but certain chloritic minerals appear to be susceptible to attack.
