This paper reviews the past year's literature relating to secure psychiatric services, with the emphasis on services in medium and high (special) security. The literature has concentrated on the processes of admission, discharge and longer term outcomes as well as descriptions of current in-patient populations. Violent incidents in secure units and strategic planning of services are two areas which receive particular attention.
