Multidisciplinary management and dynamic risk stratification optimize maternal and fetal outcomes in PAH pregnancies.
Why the study?
Despite improved outcomes for pregnant women with PAH, further research was needed on the clinical applicability of risk stratification systems and standardised processes for multidisciplinary management.
This review provides a comprehensive framework for the multidisciplinary management and risk stratification of pregnant women with pulmonary arterial hypertension, emphasizing safe pharmacological interventions and genetic counseling.
Multidisciplinary care may improve PAH pregnancy outcomes; leaves open validated risk stratification and standardized protocols.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) complicating pregnancy is a severe condition that poses a significant threat to maternal and foetal health. Despite recent improvements in outcomes for pregnant women with PAH, attributable to continuous updates in diagnostic and treatment strategies and the implementation of multidisciplinary team management, further research is needed on the clinical applicability of risk stratification systems and standardised processes for multidisciplinary management. This article provides a narrative review of the potential impact of pregnancies complicated by PAH on mothers and foetuses, as well as management strategies during pregnancy and childbirth. The aim is to summarise the health risks and management strategies for pregnant women in the preconception, antenatal, and postpartum periods, thereby providing a reference for clinical practice.
