Field assessment reveals the preservation status of threatened cultural resources, highlighting the need for systematic archaeological monitoring.
This document is the annual threatened and sensitive archaeological site condition assessment performed in Fiscal Year (FY) 1996. The Section 110 monitoring program at Vandenberg AFB was implemented during FY96. This report documents work completed for the first phase of the monitoring program. This introduction summarizes the Scope of Work, explains how the base was divided into zones to facilitate systematic examination of sites on an annual rotation, lists the sensitive and threatened sites, and presents the form used to document site condition. Section 2 discusses how the monitoring program was implemented. It is followed by summaries of cultural resources conditions for sites in Zone 8 (Section 3) and threatened and sensitive sites (Section 4). Recommendations for managing the inspected cultural resources are found in Section 5. Appended are completed forms documenting the condition of each site inspected. Appendix A contains the forms for sites in Zone 8; Appendix B consists of the forms for threatened and sensitive sites. Color slide photographs taken during monitoring are bound separately.
