The quantum corrections to the second virial coefficient of simple nonpolar polyatomic gases have been calculated for the noncentral intermolecular forces by taking into consideration the various factors, viz., (1) quadrupole–quadrupole interaction, (2) quadrupole–induced-dipole interaction, (3) anisotropy, and (4) shape factors. Experimental second virial coefficient data in conjunction with the central force parameters determined from viscosity have been used to estimate the quadrupole moment and shape factor of D2 molecule. The quadrupole moment thus obtained is in reasonable agreement with that calculated theoretically.
