Growing cultures of Clo8tridium kluyveri ferment ethanol plus acetate, yielding mainly butyrate, hexanoate and hydrogen (Bomstein & Barker, 1948).Stadtman & Barker (1949 a-e) and Kennedy & Barker (1951 a) have investigated the mechanism of butyrate synthesis by this organism, using dried cells and cell-free extracts which catalyse reactions 1 and 2: CH3.C02H + CH3.CO2PO3H2 + 2H2 CH3 .CH2R .CH2.
