We study defect states in two- and three-dimensional dielectric photonic crystals. We use the transfer-matrix method and we calculate the transmission and reflection coefficient of electromagnetic waves. The Q factor of the defect states increases exponentially with the thickness of the photonic crystal. However, it saturates at high thickness when absorption is introduced. The higher the absorption, the lower the saturated value of the Q factor.
