The notion of perturbing homeostasis in general by physical treatment (cold, radiation, etc.) of the blood flowing through an extracorporeal shunt was first published by Heymans (1) in 1921. However, it was not until a clear pattern of lymphocytic function, migration, and lifespan emerged that development of procedures to deplete the body of lymphocytes (analogous to hemorrhage...References1.
