Single crystals of yttrium‐aluminum garnet have been grown from molten PbO‐xB 2 O 3 by program cooling, where x is between 0 and 0.36 mole. The field of stability of yttrium‐aluminum garnet is found to widen with increasing B 2 O 3 content in the solvent. A portion of a pseudo phase diagram for the quaternary system PbO‐B 2 O 3 ‐Y 2 O 3 ‐Al 2 O 3 is presented. The effect of substituting certain transition metal oxides in the crystals is discussed.
