Using a variational principle, a narrow 2 S resonance of the He - system just below the first excited state of helium has been calculated. The position of this resonance is E n = 19.5 +0.1 -0.2 eV and the width Γ n lies in the range 0.8 × 10 -2 eV to 3 × 10 -2 eV, or possibly a little higher. The dependence of the width on the structure of the resonant state has been analysed for two alternative expressions.
