A model is proposed to explain the appearance of high energy ions in recent laser–solid target experiments. It is shown that the need to draw a neutralizing return current through a cold, collisional background can result in containment of laser heated electrons to the low density corona for a time long enough to appreciably accelerate the plasma ions.
