Simulation-based learning (SBL) has become prevalent in initial teacher education (ITE), providing aspiring educators with practical experiences. Researchers have explored integrating theatre methods (TMs), such as dramatisation and forum theatre, to enhance practice-oriented teacher education and support the development of key teacher knowledge and skills. This scoping review examines how TMs have been incorporated into the design and implementation of SBL in ITE programs, particularly as simulations migrate from physical to digital formats. The review highlights the value of critical TMs in cultivating critical consciousness and social justice orientations among pre-service teachers. The strategic integration of TMs within SBL elevated the authenticity, immersion, and transformative potential of practice-based pedagogies in ITE, better preparing teachers with essential skills, dispositions, and critical consciousness.
