The development of electron energy-loss spectroscopy in studies of collective surface excitation, the physics and chemistry of adsorbates, and phonon dispersion measurements is briefly reviewed. Technical features of a spectrometer adapted to momentum resolving energy-loss spectroscopy in a wide range of impact energies are described.
