The directional permeability of an anisotropic porous medium can be defined in two different ways, each yielding a different value for a given set of conditions. Permeability tests on samples generally yield a value lying between the defined ones. The relations between this measured, or apparent, permeability of a rectangular two-dimensional sample and the properties of the sample are investigated. Results providing a general solution are given in the form of equations and graphs.
