Generalized transduction in Rhizobium leguminosarum by two virulent bacteriophages, RL38 and RL39, is described. The transduction frequency was increased by ultraviolet irradiation of phage lysates. Cotransduction of auxotrophic and antibiotic resistance markers was shown, as was transduction of two PI group R plasmids. Transduction between strains of Rhizobium trifolii and interspecific transduction from R. leguminosarum to R. trifolii occurred but no transduction from R. trifolii to R. leguminosarum was detected.
