The genesis and evolution of the respirable dust and selective sampling concepts are described. The background material includes a résumé of current ideas on dust deposition and retention in the human respiratory tract and a brief but critical examination of modern dust sampling instruments and methods. Theoretical and practical developments in selective sampling for the respirable or hazardous dust fraction(s) are reviewed.
