Two partially reduced ligands and a d8-configured Ru0 center are shown by extended Hückel calculations to be present in a ruthenium complex containing a dianionic Ru(2−) center stabilized by the 2,2′-biphosphinine ligand. The ruthenium complex shown (and its iron analogue) adopts a square-planar geometry which is quite unusual for a ML4 complex having a formal d10 electronic configuration.
