In Research Article e2883647, Yang Tian, Limin Zhang, and co-workers report MM-VSD1, a light-driven molecular motor coupled to a near-infrared voltage reporter. It activates mechanosensitive TRPV1 channels in hippocampal neurons, evokes calcium influx and action potentials, and alleviates depression-like behaviours in mice. By bridging mechanical manipulation with functional readouts, this work opens an avenue for mechano-based therapeutic interventions.
