The vapour pressure of mercury was measured by Knudsen in Copenhagen in 1909 by effusion of the vapour through a small hole. The work followed on his researches into the behaviour of gases at low pressures. The same method was applied by the writer for the determination of the vapour pressure of cadium and zinc. Following on this work, Experiments were in hand to detect separation of isotopes, when Brønsted and Hevesy's brilliant success in the seperaton of mercury isotopes was announced. The present paper describes experiments carried out on the metal zinc. There is, prehaps, still a small element of uncertainty in the results. The work is not at an end. It is proposed, however, to describe itself into three parts, dealing with- (1) The distillations. (2) The means adopted of detecting separation. (3) Discussion of the results.
