The chromosome constitution of a single cancerous effusion has been studied in detail. Variation in the modal number was encountered at different times of examination of the cells, the appearance of a new modal number being due to cells previously observed in the fluid. Diversity of the karyotypes, even within a group of cells with the same chromosome number, was particularly striking. During the last examination 2 large marker chromosomes were present in over 90% of the cells; these markers were present less frequently on previous examinations. The findings of this study indicate the variability in the karyotypic picture within a single cancer and the process of karyotypic selection occurring within it.
