Ladies and gentlemen, first let me acknowledge, quite cheerfully, that I have absolutely no business kicking off a workshop on field techniques. For although I have always been drawn to field techniques, almost all my present everyday work is as an interpreter. So, if when I talk about field techniques, I sound out of touch, out of date, out of the picture…well, I am. I even live in Boston.
