Some of the problems involving the production of high efficiency laser mirror coatings are discussed. Gross scattering losses caused by dielectric particles becoming embedded in the multilayers present a major problem. An apparatus is described which was successfully used to reduce this effect to a very low level on one inch diameter, 23-layer mirrors.
