Relativistic orbitals have been used to derive the matrix elements for the photo-detachment of electrons from atoms and ions. The asymmetry parameter beta is shown to deviate from the values predicted by the non-relativistic theory, particularly for levels split by spin-orbit coupling. These effects will be largest at the Cooper minima of photoionization spectra.
