The mucopolysaccharidoses represent a subset of the lysosomal storage disorders characterized by single enzyme defects resulting in abnormal glycosaminoglycan storage. They are typified by a pervasive skeletal dysplasia which is instrumental in the diagnosis and treatment of these patients. Surgical treatment of the cervical spine, thoracolumbar spine, hips, knees and upper extremities is common. This brief review is intended to give the orthopaedic surgeon a current understanding of approaches to treatment of this complex patient group.
