A method is presented which permits the subdivision of a spherical surface into elements of precisely equal area while ensuring a close similarity of shape. The boundaries of individual elements are meridians and parallels. It is demonstrated that certain values of the total number of elements permit close approaches to identity of shape and the parameters necessary for the utilization of these optimum values are tabulated.
