Injury rates during basic recruit training were assessed at the Army Training Group, Waiouru, New Zealand. Prior to changes in boot management, observed injury rates over five recruit courses averages 85.5 ± 8.8 injuries per 100 people, or 65.4 per cent ± 6.7 of personnel were injured. Three changes were introduced for two recruit courses, and the results were a reduction in injuries per 100 people to 52.6 ± 5.4; (b) per cent of people injured to 50.0 per cent ± 1.8; and (c) the number of days off work from 104.0 ± 24.9 to 48.0 ± 19.8. There was also an observed cyclic nature to injury rate, with a frequency of about three weeks over the 10-week training period.
