In programming this symposium its organizers wisely included several papers on the molecular biology of electrogenic transducer membranes. It is germane, therefore, to present briefly experimental data which provide some specifications as to what theoretical models may be required to do. The data which are already available indicate that the molecular structures of the excitable membrane perform very complex functions. Thus, the aim of the molecular biologist, to provide insight into the structure which imparts to the membrane its remarkable capacities for bioelectrogenesis, is no mean task.
