A general procedure for constructing doubly occupied Wannier functions for metals is described. It is based on the direct minimisation of the total crystal energy. The result is a non-iterative scheme that gives a self-consistent description of the electronic properties of metals. An application to BCC Na shows good results in the lower approximation for integrated properties.
