A robust, probe-style swellmeter that can be used in a real processing situation is based on a reciprocating, broad-faced plunger which contacts the emulsion surface for 0.2 s every second. The rest position of the plunger is recorded. It is shown that the plunger does not interfere with access of solution nor does it sink into the gel in this mode of operation. Swollen gel is shown to be visco-elastic; it loses water and compacts readily under a prolonged pressure but recovers fully when the pressure is relaxed.
