At birth many major changes must occur in the circulation. The function of gas exchange is transferred from the placenta to the lungs, the kidney assumes control of water and electrolyte balance, and nutrition is obtained through the gastrointestinal tract. Blood flow regulation now assumes greater importance than during fetal life, but little is known about the role of local or humoral factors in controlling the vascular beds of these organs.
