The authors apply Coulter's unitary transformation to the Hamiltonian for N two-level systems interacting with the radiation field. The resulting dressed Hamiltonian displays single-atom and collective frequency renormalization terms, as well as retarded dipole-dipole interaction contributions in a very direct way. The existence of field-intensity-dependent frequency shifts is also discussed.
