From energy loss measurements of fast electrons on solid neon and methane the energy loss functions Im (−1/ε) and the dielectric constants ε = ε 1 + i ε 2 are calculated. The ε 2 ‐spectra of the solids are compared with the energy loss spectra of gaseous Ne and CH 4 .
