HL-A antigens were demonstrated in kidney sections by means of the indirect immunoflourescence technique. With this method, the localisation of HL-A antigens could be studied. Deposits were mainly found along the endothelium of the arteries and along the endothelium of the glomerular basal membranes. This may explain why rejection starts there. HL-A typing of kidney tissue by the immunofluorescence method and HL-A typing of lymphocytes by the lymphocytotoxicity test gave identical results in 99% of the cases.
