Assuming the point dipole approximation only and making use of vectorial notation, the signal (EMF) induced in a single-turn pick-up coil of the vibrating magnetometer is calculated for any orientation of the coil, vibration axis and magnetic moment of the sample. The formulae make it possible to distinguish three types of coil orientation. Qualitative analysis of these orientations has been made for several measurement geometries.
